Monstrosity in nineteenth- and twentieth-century British and American Gothic literature is examined. The author demonstrates that the British Gothic monsters that appear in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla, and John Polidori's The Vampyre, are all creatures that are (or used to be) human in nature, and, therefore, need and seek human companionship. Alternatively, American Gothic monsters that appear in Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Edgar Allen Poe's Ligeia (1838), The Fall of the House of User (1839) and The Raven (1845), and Nathanial Hawthorne's Rappaccini's Daughter, are the fictitious products of diseased or unbalanced minds and, therefore, are sadistic and harmful to other humans.
